Dear lord, I haven’t really finished a digital illustration or any art in a long while. At least not the kind that can be put on exhibition so easily. I suppose I can wax about how all of life is art, but then I just get kind of nebulous and lose the plot of right now.
My body has been kind of tight with anxiety, and my mind has been scattered. Managing injuries and uncertainties with my immigration process has left me feeling really depleted. I do the best that I can. I think most of us do. I’ve been scheming on how I can get out of a mental rut with the next paycheck that comes through. Injuries and grief have kind of consumed me this last month, and channeling it into art is the best I can do at the moment.
So, find a bit more about the symbolism in my latest digital art creation I made with my iPad and Procreate below.
It’s titled:
Me, My Menses, and The Moon.
The symbols
The bird
I based the bird imagery on a pigeon. With my travels in Argentina, Mexico, and Ecuador, it’s the most common type of bird that is internationally present. The pigeon also has a history of domestication but now mostly roams free. I see them as a symbol of resilience and liberty.
The scorpion
The scorpion in relation to astrology is a symbol of death and transformation. It holds sexual and creative energy that is fertile and fecund. It is one of the only symbols of the zodiac that has different forms - The scorpion, the snake, and the bird (often depicted as a phoenix’s or eagle). In my initial sketch, which you will see in a future timelapse, the snake was included. I wanted to make something a bit simpler this iteration, though.
The heart
A prominent figure in most of my art. I like to call myself a heartist. I create from my heart and try to move from there too. Just like the brain, it’s a center for connection, and I believe it holds memory.
The stairs
To represent ascension through inner-standing. Know thyself vibes. Self transformation
The face
lol my roommate asked if it was me and yes. It is. A lot of my art is deeply personal. Not everything I draw is me but this is. It’s the subject I know best. Sometimes I do draw people who aren’t me but this piece was more personal.
The moon
A symbol of dreams, cycles, and greater spiritual awareness. A full moon illustrates a knowing. A deep reflection. An expose.
The colors
Red
Aside from denoting blood from menses, red is a color for grounding and stability.
Blue and Pink
These colors I picked because they both remind me of a traditional pigeon, and also they represent colors found on the trans flag.
White
Representing ascension, transformation, and a higher power.
Honestly, I can wax on about this! And I intend to in a video post. But in the meantime, let me know what you think. I’m considering making these into stickers.
